Journalist Florian Plettenberg has confirmed that Manchester United have yet to play any role in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon talisman Viktor Gyokeres, but he hints that could soon change as the Swede continues to rock Portugal.
The Swedish forward continued his goalscoring spree in the Primeira Liga last night with four goals in Sporting’s 5-1 win over Estrela da Amadora.
At this rate, with 20 goals in just 16 games this season, Gyokeres is quickly becoming the most sought-after forward in Europe and it wasn’t long ago that he was playing his football in the Championship with Coventry City.
It was an emotional evening at Sporting’s Jose Alvalade Stadium as they began their farewell to manager Amorim, who has been officially confirmed as United’s new head coach. He stressed in his post-match interview that he does not intend to sign any players from the Portuguese champions in January, which will come with a sigh of relief from many in Lisbon.
Manchester United yet to join race for Viktor Gyokeres
On Friday night, Florian Plettenberg jumped on the Gyokeres to United story by stating the Reds have yet to make their intentions clear over a future move.
I guess United can be excused for being preoccupied with trying to take Sporting’s manager, never mind their best players.
Plettenberg wrote on X: “So far, Manchester United have not played a role in the race for Viktor Gyokeres.
“However, with the confirmed appointment of Ruben Amorim at #MUFC, it is possible that the Red Devils will become involved soon. Close sources believe this will happen, as Amorim is a big fan of Gyokeres. The Swedish striker has scored 59 goals and provided 23 assists in 65 games under the new United manager at Sporting so far.
“Four clubs are currently in the race: Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea. The 26y/o can leave Sporting next summer for €60-70m, as revealed earlier this week.”
Manchester United fans wouldn’t say no to Gyokeres
With United struggling to win matches and score goals this season, it comes as no great surprise that Gyokeres is seen as a possible forward addition in 2025.
Rasmus Hojlund could thrive under Amorim, but we’ve yet to see who will be feature in his preferred forward line at Old Trafford. All we know is that he got it right at Sporting.
