Manchester United academy graduate Toby Collyer has been ruled out of action for a month after picking up an injury.
This means caretaker boss Ruud van Nistelrooy remains limited for options in midfield, with reports stating the young midfielder won’t be available for a month.
Collyer’s last appearance under Erik ten Hag in the 3-3 draw against FC Porto in the Europa League. Sadly, he hasn’t been seen since but could’ve proved an asset for Van Nistelrooy before Ruben Amorim arrives.
It had been confirmed before the 2-1 win over Brentford that Collyer had sustained an injury blow, but Ten Hag did not provide specific details of the knock or when the youngster is expected to return.
His last competitive game came for the U21s against Liverpool on October 6. Collyer also debuted for England’s U20s during the October international break.
According to a new report from the Manchester Evening News, Collyer faces ‘roughly a month’ out, which means he is unlikely to make an appearance under Van Nistelrooy.
It’s an unfortunate setback for Collyer and sources maintained for some time that Ten Hag thought very highly of him as a prospect for the first team.
Toby Collyer will be trying to impress the new manager when he returns
Collyer will soon get to impress a new manager at United when Amorim is appointed.
There will be fierce competition in the squad with everyone keen to get in the new manager’s good books. Some may even find out that they’re not part of his plans for the future.
However, United fans will hope that Amorim continues the tradition of giving young players opportunities in the first team.
Not every player that comes from the academy is deemed good enough to make the grade, but we’ve produced some world class talents in recent years such as Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.
Long may that continue.
