Ruud van Nistelrooy enjoyed a scintillating start to his short spell as Manchester United’s interim manager on Wednesday evening.

The Old Trafford faithful were left beaming when Andy Madley blew his whistle to signal full-time in M16 last night – and not only because they’d watched their side achieve something they failed to do even once under Erik ten Hag: put five past an opponent.

Indeed, it was a joyful atmosphere all around, with fans lapping up the chance to celebrate with their former goalscoring hero as he orchestrated the team’s affairs from the dugout.

Van Nistelrooy’s name was frequently bellowed out by those in attendance and, when making his way down the tunnel, he shared a special moment with the Stretford End – a place where he enjoyed plenty of unforgettable, treasured moments in his playing career.

Given the stark difference in United’s showing against the Foxes compared to that of last weekend’s defeat to West Ham, or any showing since the season began, the manager was pressed by reporters on what he’d told the players to get them so riled up ahead of kick-off.

“My team talk, I’m standing in front of the team telling them about what Manchester United is about and what it is to play at Old Trafford,” he explained in today’s press conference. “Telling them what songs are being sung by the fans and why. So, you try to transmit that feeling, that lovely feeling playing for this club.

“It’s a proud moment sharing that with players, and what they were transmitting on the pitch, and the way it interacted with the supporters. Also towards me, it was unbelievable support and it only strengthens me to do the utmost, especially short term, for Chelsea.”

Similarly, Van Nistelrooy was also undoubtedly feeling inspired after a chat he’d had with the Reds’ greatest-ever manager, Sir Alex Ferguson.

“He wished me luck,” the Dutchman revealed. “We spoke shortly about my situation, shortly about the team and most of all he wished me luck before the game. It’s always great to speak to him.”

As Ruben Amorim has agreed to complete a notice period with Sporting Lisbon, Van Nistelrooy will remain in charge of his former club for fixtures against Chelsea (PL), PAOK (EL) and Leicester (PL).
