Manchester United XI vs Fenerbahce: Mazraoui starts in unfamiliar role

Erik ten Hag has named his Manchester United starting eleven to face Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

There are changes to the team that defeated Brentford 2-1 on Saturday, with Ten Hag also having one eye on Sunday’s trip to West Ham in the Premier League.

Bruno Fernandes is ruled out due to suspension and Jonny Evans steps out of defence after taking a knock against Brentford.

United failed to win either of their opening two Europa League outings, drawing with both FC Twente and FC Porto, meaning they are already under pressure to reach the knockout stages.

Andre Onana starts between the sticks at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

The back four consists of Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt, Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez.

Manuel Ugarte gets a rare start in midfield alongside Christian Eriksen, while Noussair Mazraoui makes a surprise start in the Number 10 position.

The front three consists of Alejandro Garnacho, Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford.

After beating Brentford on Saturday, the question tonight is whether United can build on that.

The line-up makes for interesting reading and suggests Ten Hag is willing to experiment, with Mazraroui played in an advanced midfield role.

The Moroccan is technically brilliant but he will be put out of his comfort zone tonight. That doesn’t mean it’s the wrong move for the manager. Only time will tell on that front.
