After pulling the curtains on his 22-year association with Manchester United in the summer, Scott McTominay has enjoyed a scintillating start to his Napoli tenure.

Despite what numerous reports would have you think, it was actually the Scot’s decision to part ways with his boyhood club, as confirmed by sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Speculation around the time of his sale suggested that United had chosen him to offload in order to create more room for manoeuvre around the Profit and Sustainability laws; as the 27-year-old is a homegrown product, the fee his departure generated – reportedly in the region of £25 million all-in – counts as pure profit for the club.

Yet, seemingly aware that he’d again be navigating a rotational role, McTominay swapped his beloved United for pastures new, taking his talents to Naples to work under highly respected head coach Antonio Conte.

In his five appearances for the Serie A giants, he has notched two goals and one assist whilst becoming an instant hit with the Napoli faithful for his relentless efforts across each cameo thus far.

FIFA agent Cristian Bosco Lunedi was also quick to heap praise on the Scotland international, saying (via Manchester Evening News): “You can be a winner even if you have different DNA. This Napoli is a cynical Napoli.

“McTominay will still have to prove himself in Italy, but he is potentially one of the best midfielders in Napoli’s history.”

The former Manchester United star will have to showcase a little more to be considered a bona fide midfield legend fit to walk Naples’ hall of fame, though the early signs indicate this was a potential smart signing.

Sofascore have Scott McTominay down as averaging a rating of 7.05/10 in Serie A so far.
