Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United is in real doubt and links to Ruud van Nistelrooy becoming interim boss seem inevitable as a result.

The media has wasted no time throwing Van Nistelrooy’s name into the mix as a potential successor to Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy returned to United in the summer as a new addition to Ten Hag’s backroom staff. It has now emerged that the former goalscorer would be open to becoming manager.

According to Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen, Van Nistelrooy would be ‘open’ to replacing Ten Hag as manager, if the United boss is sacked.

Speaking on Vandraag Inside, as cited by Sport Witness, Driessen said: “I think Nistelrooy is open to it. And that could be possible, because the dream candidate is of course not there. Van Nistelrooy comes from the club and is already well regarded by the players. Someone who has played football at the top, also at United.”

Ten Hag is under pressure after a dismal start to the season. The Reds haven’t improved from last season when they finished eighth in the Premier League.

It is understood that Ten Hag has two games to save his job, meaning it’s an enormous week for the Dutchman as United face FC Porto and Aston Villa away from home.
