Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez has ranked the best defenders in the world, including Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez.

There has not been a lot to get excited about since the start of the season. Manchester United have performed poorly and the results tell you that.

Slightly improvements across the defence will help Erik ten Hag but it won’t keep him in a job at this rate.

United may be keeping more clean sheets this season, but it’s not worth anything unless you are scoring goals to win football matches. The Reds are without a win in their previous three matches.

United lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend, in what was one of Ten Hag’s worst games as manager. Ange Postecoglou’s side ran riot at Old Trafford after scoring three minutes into the match.

There was no response from United, who are lacking leaders throughout the pitch.

One leader of men in the squad is Lisandro Martinez and he has been picked out for praise by a fellow Argentina international.

Julian Alvarez, who joined Atletico Madrid from Man City in the summer, has given Martinez a huge compliment.

Speaking to ESPN, Alvarez named Martinez alongside Tottenham’s Cristian Romero and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.

Alvarez was asked who the best centre-backs were that he has played against. He said: “Van Dijk, because he’s very strong. He’s one of the best defenders in the world.”

He continues: “I faced? Cuti Romero and Licha Martinez. Cuti because he is very aggressive and one of the best centre-backs in the world now too. And Licha as well. Both of them are very similar in their aggressive defending.”
