The spotlight remains firmly on Erik ten Hag after Manchester United’s slow start to the season.

It’s been such a slow start that valid questions are being asked whether it will ever pick up under Ten Hag, who is undoubtedly under severe pressure to keep his job at Old Trafford.

Matters were made worse on Sunday as United fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham. The Reds were well beaten on the day and fans were subjected to another terrible performance.

The criticisms after the match were aimed at Ten Hag as well as the players.

Netherlands legend Marco van Basten has now aimed his frustration at the players for their performance. He also pointed the finger at Ten Hag for recruits such as Manuel Ugarte, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain on transfer deadline day.

The Uruguayan performed abysmally not just against Spurs, but FC Twente also.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport, as relayed by SoccerNews.NI: “I saw a new player, Ugarte, or something like that.

“Fifty million euros! Then I think: how can he walk around like that? It’s crazy how much money he spent on players who aren’t good.”

Van Basten also took aim at Marcus Rashford when he added that United have no top players.

“Just no top players,” Van Basten added. “Rashford? He doesn’t hit a pepper nut anymore. Fernandes is a good player, Onana is a decent keeper. For the rest, there are no guys about whom you can say: they are strong players.”

The former Netherlands international went on to call Casemiro ‘passe’ in his assessment.

On Sunday, I thought the only United player to coat himself with any credit was Onana because without his saves it would have been a cricket scoreline.
