‘Heart of a lion’: Hargreaves says Utd fans will ‘love’ ‘perfect’ summer signing – he’s reminiscent of club legends

Despite completing his move from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day last month, Manuel Ugarte is still awaiting his maiden Premier League start.

The midfielder has made four appearances in all competitions thus far, being deployed from the off in last week’s Carabao Cup triumph over Barnsley as well as Wednesday night’s Europa League opener. He has featured for a total of only 31 minutes in the league, courtesy of two off-the-bench cameos against Southampton and Crystal Palace.

It remains to be seen if he will be given the nod this Sunday when Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in what’s looking more and more like a must-win clash based on recent results. Kobbie Mainoo is almost certain to retain his place, while Christian Eriksen’s costly error that gifted FC Twente their equaliser last night could see him dropped after being awarded four successive starts.

Ugarte, 23, has drawn mixed reviews from supporters since his debut, with some overtly pleased with his transition to the squad and others, doubtful of his suitability.

Owen Hargreaves is of the belief that the summer recruit has it in him to be on par with a host of United legends, saying (via the Metro): “This kid will deliver because he’s a player. He’s a one-man press – tackle. He turns the ball over as good as anyone in European football, and I think United fans are going to love him.

“They’ve seen these players over the years, the Bryan Robsons, the Paul Inces, the Paul Scholes, Michael Carricks. Ugarte gives you that. He gives you balance. He’s probably not the best attacking player, but in terms of protection in front of the back four, getting the ball back, getting the ball to guys who are going to win you the game.”

“He’s just what Manchester United need,” Hargreaves continued. “I love the fact that they signed a kid like him. He’s got a heart of a lion, and these fans have seen those players, and they love that type of player. I think he’s going to be perfect for United.

“I think he’s a good partner for Kobbie Mainoo as well. It’s going to be a good balance in midfield, better than it was last season.”
