Rio Ferdinand reveals £38.5million Manchester United star first impressions

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has revealed his first impression of one of the summer arrivals after visiting Carrington last week.

Rio Ferdinand has revealed he had a positive experience after visiting the Manchester United training ground prior to the Southampton win.

The former Red Devil has revealed that he was impressed with summer signing Matthijs de Ligt in training and he has revealed that he had an interesting conversation with the new Red Devil.

De Ligt scored his first goal for Manchester United at Saint Mary’s to top off a man-of-the-match performance in the 3-0 victory against Southampton.

It was a much-needed performance from the Dutchman who has recently received scrutiny in the media after poor showings for his national side in the international break.

It is a new start for the 25-year-old who is keen to play regular games and become an important player at Manchester United.

After visiting the Carrington training complex the Manchester United legend has revealed his experience of chatting to summer arrival De Ligt.

Speaking on his YouTube channel FIVE, the former Red Devil said: “He needs games, and even a moment in that game [Southampton] he had Kyle Walker-Peters move him up a little bit out wide, but no centre-back wants to be out there anyway.

“What I noticed when I went the training ground the other day, I actually spent the whole day there and he came over and we spoke a little bit. You can see he’s got a good energy, eager to be there, eager to get into the assignment. He understands the assignment at Manchester United.

“He’s been at big clubs, he understands what it’s like the pressure.

“You can see he’s excited to be there, excited to be part of the new kind of Man united under Ineos’ new management.

“I’m interested to see how he does because I can sense a leadership kind of role for him, I can sense somebody that could influence other people as well.

“He just needs games, I think he hasn’t played enough games over the last few years. He’s played some games but I don’t think there has been consistency with performances as well.

“We have to remember at 18 years old he went to the semi-finals of the Champions League.”
