‘He’s fantastic’ – Roberto Martinez impressed with United star after 2-1 win over Croatia

Two Manchester United players were involved as Portugal began their UEFA Nations League campaign with a win over Croatia on Thursday night.

Diogo Dalot scored at both ends of the pitch in the 2-1 win and Bruno Fernandes registered his 21st goal contribution in his previous 17 outings for his country.

Meanwhile, club legend Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 900th goal of his career.

All eyes are on Roberto Martinez to see whether he can find a system to get the best out of his Portugal squad.

Dalot played at right-back, on his preferred flank, after starting the season with United on the left due to the lack of cover at left-back.

The 25-year-old was credited with an unfortunate own goal against Croatia, but manager Roberto Martinez was delighted with his performance.

“It makes a difference that we have different options and we can execute them after three training sessions. There is worth and continuity. Dalot and Semedo can play inside and outside,” Martinez said, as quoted by Manchester World.

“Croatia had difficulties with the breaks inside that Dalot executed very well. I really liked Dalot, the principle of play hasn’t changed. He’s fantastic and speaks volumes about the players, it’s not easy to have these tactical concepts in three training sessions.”

Dalot has new competition at right-back this season, with United adding Noussair Mazraoui to the squad over the summer.
