Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay has caused a debate within the fanbase. Former striker Teddy Sheringham wasn’t pleased to see his deal to Napoli materialise last week.
I spoke to several fans ahead of the defeat to Liverpool on Sunday who believe it was a mistake to part ways with McTominay.
The Scotland international may not have been a starter under Erik ten Hag, but he became a useful option from the bench under the Dutchman with a tendency to arrive late into the box from midfield.
McTominay scored 10 goals across all competitions last season and spent a chunk of the season as United’s top scorer. He was a player the manager could always rely on to fulfil a role but his transfer to Napoli was confirmed on transfer deadline day.
Sheringham made it clear that he had a lot of time for McTominay as a United player. Speaking to Ladbrokes’ ‘Gaffer of all Accas’, as cited by CaughtOffside, he said: “The only player who I’d say can hold his head up for his effort in a United shirt over the past few months would be Scott McTominay… and he’s just gone to Napoli.
“He’s one of your players who runs and chases when things aren’t going well. He works things out, and he tries to put things right. There doesn’t look to be too many people out there trying to put things right; they’re all playing in their own little shells… ‘please don’t dig me out this week, it might be my turn…’
“That’s not how you play in a top football team. You’ve got to look after one another, you’ve got to help your teammates out, and hope they help you out when you falter. That’s how you grind games out sometimes. It’s not always pretty football; especially when you’re still working out how you’re going to play.”
