Lisandro Martinez reveals former Champions League winner idol

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has revealed who he looks up to and his favourite all-time defender.

The Argentinian defender quickly became a fan favourite at Old Trafford with his aggressive style of defending and commitment to show his passion for Manchester United.

The former Ajax defender struggled with injuries last campaign and was a huge miss for Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag.

Since arriving from Amsterdam in 2022, the 26-year-old has been key to Ten Hag’s system and the team’s ability to build up from the back with his ball-playing skills.

Ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool, Martinez has spoken to Sky Sports about his time in Manchester.

Reflecting on his connection with the supporters the Argentinian said: “I think as a fan of Manchester United, I want the players like fighting for my club. So I think that’s our connection. I chose to fight, I chose [to] give my best on the pitch.”

Reflecting on his inspirations as a defender, Martinez was asked who he considered an all-time great.

The fan favourite revealed that he loves the way Sergio Ramos played and considers him a big inspiration.

Speaking on Ramos, Martinez said: “Yeah, I know a fighter, but with a big personality, big leader on the pitch. I love the play, the way he played his career and [the] many titles he won.”

Ramos was close to joining Manchester United back in 2014 under Louis Van Gaal but opted to extend his contract at Real Madrid.

Manchester United fans will hope Martinez will play a big part in United’s future and win some titles at Old Trafford himself.
