Ruud van Nistelrooy helps misfiring Manchester United forward with extra training sessions

Ruud van Nistelrooy has his work cut out for him at Manchester United.

The legendary goalscorer returned to Manchester United this summer to join Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff as assistant manager. It was thought at the time that he would have a role to play in improving the team’s forward players.

One of the biggest tasks will be getting Marcus Rashford back to his best.

The 26-year-old is still a world away from the brilliant form of two years ago, when he was United’s stand-out star, scoring 30+ goals across all competitions during Ten Hag’s first season in charge. It was understood at the time that former coach Benni McCarthy was helping Ten Hag get the best out of his attacking players, but it wasn’t repeated last season.

According to The Sun, Van Nistelrooy is holding one-on-one sessions with Rashford to resolve the problem.

Rashford has been unable to open his goalscoring account after two games this season, although he had a goal ruled out for offside against Brighton during Saturday’s 2-1 defeat.

Now he is working closely with Van Nistelrooy, who scored 150 goals in five years at Old Trafford.

It is understood that the Dutchman is staying behind after regular training to work with Rashford on all aspects of his role.

The report states: “There has been particular focus on back post awareness an runs across the box.”

Furthermore, sources have told The Sun that Rashford is enjoying the extra work, but he wasn’t able to show that when United travelled to Brighton.
