Player ratings: Manchester United come up short in Brighton defeat

There will be an inquest into both goals conceded by Manchester United at the Amex Stadium.

The Reds secored an equaliser through Amad Diallo but it wasn’t enough with Pedro netting the winner in stoppage time.

A 96th minute goal won the game for Brighton to prevent a first-ever Premier League draw between the two teams.

United can feel unlucky because had Alejandro Garnacho’s goal counted. That was turning point of the game.

Brighton go top of the league, as United have one win and one defeat at the start of the season.

Manchester United player ratings vs Brighton

Andre Onana

Distribution was better this week and helped Dalot on his way to creating a chance for Amad Diallo in the first half. Made a big tackle inside the box with a reckless tackle. 6

Noussair Mazraoui

Caught off for Welbeck’s opening but tidy for the most part. 5

Harry Maguire

Poor for Brighton’s opener. Other than, a solid display. Grew into the game after his mistake for the goal. 5

Lisandro Martinez

Good on the ball but needs to be more alert defensively. He was closest to Welbeck for the opening goal. 5

Diogo Dalot

Put it on a plate for Amad in the first half. It was worthy of an assist. Caught napping for Brighton’s winner.  5

Casemiro

Defensive liability. Not a smooth performance last week but he had more work to do. 5

Kobbie Mainoo

United didn’t get him on the ball enough. Looked dangerous when involved in build-up play. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Substituted before the end due to how he was playing. Still has as a surprise. 5

Amad Diallo

Poor in the first half, but grew into the game after the break. Deserved his goal but could have scored two. 6

Mason Mount

Unlucky to be hauled off at half-time. Great in the press, but needs to do more on the ball. 6

Marcus Rashford

Weakest player on the pitch. 3

Subs

Joshua Zirkzee

Misfortunate to touch the ball to prevent Garnacho’s goal for offside.

Alejandro Garnacho

Thought he made it 2-1 but Zirkzee was offside and got the final touch on the ball. Made a difference. 7

Scott McTominay

Made a positive impact after coming on. Not enough to win the game or secure a point, sadly. 6

Antony

Came on late. N/A

  1. A message to the fans, we are working on improving the team. Weak players with terrible attitudes like Rashford will be moved on. Stay with us. This is a 10 year plan.

  2. I agree with most of the ratings, and I think your comments highlight a growing problem at Man Utd: players who put in high effort when MU is out of possession and off the ball (when MU has possession), but don’t do much (or much that’s intelligent) on the ball. The best example is Mason Mount.

The usual exception is Bruno, but when he has a mediocre game it really shows up how little the rest of the team ‘creates’.

I’d describe MU’s effort againts Brighton mostly as ‘limp’ – analogous to the cavalry charging valiantly against the enemy and then striking them forcefully with a pool noodle.

    1. Thanks for your comment and further observations. Interesting view two games into a defining season. We need to see a response against the SCUM on Sunday.
