Jack Fletcher starred for Manchester United’s U21s on Tuesday night against Barnsley.
Travis Binnion’s youngsters travelled to Barnsley last night and trailed by two goals heading into the final 10 minutes of their EFL Trophy curtain-raiser. The game was turned on its head as Darren Fletcher’s 17-year-old son Jack scored a brace in three minutes to force a comeback.
United started the match on the back foot while Barnsley dominated the early stages. Barnsley youngster Vimal Yoganathan got his name on the scoresheet twice in the first half with the first senior goals of his career.
This meant Barnsley led 2-0 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Ethan Ennis pulled one back for the Reds before Fletcher lashed home an equaliser from outside the box. To make it 3-2, Fletcher scored again, but this time he took advanced of Barnsley’s tiring defence.
The U21s take on Doncaster Rovers next month in the EFL Trophy after showing great character to force a comeback against Barnsley, who finished sixth in League One last season.
Jack Fletcher is one to watch
After joining United at the beginning of last season alongside twin brother Tyler from Man City, the Fletcher brothers became a crucial part of Adam Lawrence’s treble-winning U18s last term.
Fletcher will get plenty of football with the U21s this season to continue his development, which means we can keep a close eye on the process.
He was included in the club’s pre-season but only played in the friendly games before the squad departed for the United States. Fletcher used the two weeks to train with the first-team players.
