Serie A outfit set sights on Manchester United defender

Victor Lindelof has been linked with a move away from Manchester United all summer, but the Swede remains part of the squad.

United have bought two new centre-backs this summer, Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, meaning the Swede has fallen down the pecking order.

If Yoro was fit and not ruled out for three months recovering from a metatarsal injury, Lindelof would be fifth choice centre-back at the club, behind Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire too.

This has led to uncertainty surrounding Lindelof’s future, with links to Fenerbahce circulating over the summer. It was suggested that Jose Mourinho wanted to sign the centre-back for the Turkish giants but they have yet to make a serious offer.

The Premier League season started last night with United beating Fulham 1-0 at Old Trafford. A few hours before the game news broke of Eintracht Frankfurt’s interest in the defender.

A few hours later and it seemed like word was getting around that Lindelof is in fact available this summer, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that Serie A outfit Fiorentina are keen on the player.

Di Marzio wrote: “Fiorentina have set their sights on Lindelof.

“The player still has a year of contract with Manchester United, a club with which he has a salary of 3 million euros.

“At the moment, Fiorentina are working to understand the possible conditions of exit and a contribution to the salary at Manchester United.”

It remains to be seen if United are open to a loan deal involving Lindelof, but it doesn’t look like he is going to get many games this season.

Jonny Evans was given a one-year contract extension this summer and came off the bench in the win over Fulham. The Northern Ireland international could easily move ahead of Lindelof in the pecking order at Old Trafford, despite being aged 36.

Perhaps United could do an exchange deal with Fiorentina… offer them Lindelof for Amrabat. That way we’ll be getting more cover in midfield while losing an option we don’t really need in defence.

To Lindelof’s credit, his versatility came as a bonus to Ten Hag last term, but the squad has moved on this summer thanks to several defensive recruits.
