Former Manchester United striker Charlie McNeill opened his Sheffield Wednesday account with two goals in 10 minutes on his debut to earn his new club a 2-1 win at Hull City in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
McNeill, 20, opened the scoring after 25 seconds before Marvin Mehlem equalised for Hull after nine minutes.
But the winning goal came a minute later following a calamitous goalkeeping error from Anthony Racioppi gifted McNeill the match-winning goal.
It granted McNeill a dream debut, which we’re delighted to see.
Even if players don’t make it at United, it’s always a treat to see them do well elsewhere, even if it’s down the lower tiers of English football.
McNeill was one of a several players to leave United this summer. Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane were the most high-profile exits as their contracts ended in June. Brandon Williams was also shown the door, while Shola Shoretire found new surroundings at PAOK.
United signed McNeill from Man City in 2020 when he joined the academy as a hot prospect. He became the first academy player to be given a first-team debut under Ten Hag at the club, but he couldn’t break into the side on a regular enough basis to remain and it was best for all parties to move on.
Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl revealed he has high hopes for McNeill after signing the young striker this summer.
“I’ve seen a lot of good things from him,” Rohl said, as per Limerick Live.
“I saw his quality – his touches between the lines – and he did very well against the ball.
“He was clinical and it was fantastic to see, but it’s about working hard as we have a lot of young players at the club.”
McNeill will aim to continue making his presence felt at Sheffield Wednesday.
