Manchester United have long been mulling over the future of Scott McTominay, but one prospect has never been an option: sending him out on loan.
After all, why on Earth would they? A loan doesn’t benefit United in any way, shape, or form, and McTominay is already garnering enough interest to potentially complete a permanent move away this summer.
Yet, Napoli certainly tried their luck when negotiating with the Red Devils. They put forth the possibility of taking the 52-cap Scotland international on loan for the 2024/2025 campaign – a proposal that wasn’t even entertained by United, per Gianluca Di Marzio.
The clubs targeting McTominay this summer
McTominay, 27, has his pick of suitors before deadline day; Everton, Fulham, Brentford, Fenerbache and Galatasaray have all made clear their desire to bring the experienced midfielder to their ranks, although only the Cottagers have materialised their interest by sending two bids United’s way. Both fell below their £25 million valuation.
Should he be sold, whether that be this window or a future one, his exit will generate straight profit for the club, as he is a homegrown talent. In turn, this gives the board more breathing space around the Premier League’s financial restrictions.
