Manchester United player ratings after Community Shield defeat: Amad & Garnacho shine

Manchester United lost the Community Shield on penalties but were the better team throughout 90 minutes.

The match ended 1-1 before City won 7-6 on penalties. A late equaliser from Bernardo Silva cancelled out a stunning goal from Alejandro Garnacho, with both players proving to be influential off the bench.

Ten Hag named a strong side for the Wembley showdown with Lisandro Martinez, Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes all starting despite missing pre-season due to their involvement in the latter stages of major international tournaments this summer.

City dominated the early stages, but United grew into the game after 20 minutes and created the best chances.

A lapse in concentration cost us in the end as Silva forced the game to penalties.

Andre Onana – 5

Distributed the ball well and stood little chance with Silva’s goal. Showcased a bit of theatrics during the penalty shootout to minimal effect and a good save to deny City’s only scorer.

Harry Maguire – 5

Good defensively but didn’t offer anything when he attempted to carry the ball out of defence.

Jonny Evans – 5

Not 100% but you could also say Evans looked his age. Awful penalty.

Diogo Dalot – 5

A concern defensively but improved as the game went on. Jeremy Doku got the better of him but Dalot didn’t let that stop him converting his spot kick.

Lisandro Martinez – 5

Shoehorned into the side at left-back due to a lack of options. Improved in the second half after being switched to centre-back.

Casemiro – 6

The Brazilian’s passing was crisp but his defending raised eyebrows (not in a good way) on a few occasions.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6

Tidy display without standing out.

Mason Mount – 5

Quiet evening for Mount after being asked to play further forward than usual. Looked isolated at times.

Amad Diallo – 7

Manchester United’s main threat in attack. Made things happen in the final third but lacked end product.

Marcus Rashford – 4

Wasted two very good chances on goal.

Bruno Fernandes – 6

The sooner he reaches full fitness the better because Fernandes showed glimpses of brilliance against City. If only we had a centre forward available to take advantage of the opportunities Fernandes created.

Subs

Facundo Pellistri – 4

Struggled in his makeshift right-back role and was caught out for City’s equaliser.

Scott McTominay – 6

The Scotland international gave us some much-needed energy when he came off the bench. Unlucky not to have flicked home a close-range attempt following Rashford’s knockdown as United searched for the opening goal

Toby Collyer – 6

Mature display for our latest academy graduate. Put a graft in when he came on.

Alejandro Garnacho – 8

The starboy was a constant threat. Put it on a plate for Rashford before he put the ball in the back of the net.
