Ornstein explains why a deal would be ‘complicated’ for United and Liverpool in pursuit of sought-after No.6

Liverpool have today ignited their pursuit of Manchester United-linked midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Paul Joyce initially broke the news this afternoon before his claims were further verified by the ever-reliable David Ornstein, while reports of United’s interest have been widespread in recent weeks.

Now, the ball is in INEOS’ court if they want to go head-to-head with the Merseyside outfit and directly vie for Zubimendi’s signature before the season begins next Friday.

Ornstein has, however, assured that any prospective deal for the 25-year-old will be ‘complicated’ due to his £51.7 million release clause – assuming La Real are unwilling to accept a cut-price fee.

Zubimendi currently uninterested in Premier League move

Fresh off the back of being crowned a European champion with Spain, Zubimendi has garnered interest from a host of sides, with Arsenal and Barcelona also monitoring from afar – although it’s thought that the player would prefer to stay with his boyhood club for the foreseeable future.

United chiefs are scouring the market for alternatives to Manuel Ugarte, as they are unwilling to meet Paris Saint-Germain’s £51m demands. As such, they may be of a similar stance when it comes to negotiating a price for Zubimendi.
