Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has explained his stance on returning to Old Trafford.
After spending six years at United, the Dutchman’s playing career came to an end in 2011.
Van der Sar had a successful spell with the Reds and will go down in history as one of the best goalkeepers to have played for the club. He won four Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Even though Van der Sar’s goalkeeper gloves were locked away in retirement, he went on to become Ajax’s chief executive officer in 2016. He built a strong reputation as a CEO and the club enjoyed a period of great success under now-United manager Erik ten Hag, who won three Eredivisie titles during his time in Amsterdam.
Van der Sar has been speaking Humberto a Paris, as relayed by Voetbal Primeur, about his desire to return to football after leaving Ajax in 2023.
A question about United was posed to Van der Sar, but the former keeper doesn’t think a return to Old Trafford is on the cards and joked that there’s already too many Dutchmen at the club.
“I do not think I want to take the next step,” Van der Sar said.
“I will have to find a new goal. For a long time, I had the goal of bringing Ajax up to the European top. Now I have temporarily lost my goals, but I will find it at some point.
“I think there are enough Dutchmen (at Manchester United) at the moment. Let those men get to work on the field.
“I don’t know if I want to work fifty or sixty hours again. Will it be individual projects, something with a federation or something in sports? I have no idea yet. But sports are appealing. That’s the best thing there is.”
Van der Sar must also put his health and family first after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage while holidays in Croatia in July 2023.
