Manchester United want to strengthen their midfield department with Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte becoming a prime target, but there are multiple back-up options.
The Reds could look at former Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, who reportedly snubbed a move to Liverpool as his desire is to join United. He wouldn’t demand a transfer fee after becoming a free agent last month.
Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi is another option, after impressing at the European Championship in Germany earlier this summer.
Another player under consideration at United will be Sofyan Amrabat, who spent last season on loan at the club from Fiorentina. United passed on the opportunity to buy the Morocco international in a deal that has now expired, but a new agreement could materialise before the transfer window shuts.
Norwegian alternative
Speaking on The Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles claims United are discussing Sander Berge as an alternative to Ugarte.
“Another individual who I don’t think has been mentioned at all as a candidate for Manchester United, but who I’m told they are discussing as an option should the Ugarte deal not go through is Norway international Sander Berge.”
Berge was initially linked with a move to United in January 2020 but signed for Sheffield United that month. He cost the Blades £22m and they told him to Burnley for almost half that 12 months ago, but it is understood that they want £20m for the midfielder this summer.
The Norway international deserves another opportunity to England’s top flight after Burnley finished second bottom of the table last term, therefore, suffered relegation to the Championship.
But should this opportunity come at United? Not if he isn’t capable of drastically improving our midfield department.
