Steve McClaren takes first managerial role in five years to take charge of Jamaica

Steve McClaren has become Jamaica manager.

The Manchester United coach has filled the vacant role of Jamaica manager, after returning to Old Trafford in 2022 as part of Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff which has seen multiple changes this summer.

The president of the Jamaica Football Federation, Michael Ricketts, said (via talkSPORT): “We are truly elated to announce the appointment of Mr McClaren as head coach of the Reggae Boyz.

“We are confident we made the right decision and we are looking forward to him guiding out nation towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake are just two of the new coaches that have arrived at United in the last month.

McClaren worked with Ten Hag previously during his time coaching FC Twente, but their journey together at United has come to an end.

It will be McClaren’s first international job since he was in charge of England. His last managerial role was at QPR five years ago.

Jamaica have been without a head coach since Heimir Hallgrimsson left earlier this month, only for the Icelandic coach to become the Republic of Ireland manager.

Former Manchester United duo Steve Bruce and Dwight Yorke are among other names to have been linked with the Reggae Boyz vacancy.

We wish him the very best following a second spell as assistant manager at Old Trafford.

McClaren is part of the furniture at United. He’ll forever have a place in the club’s history.
