Newcastle star Anthony Gordon linked with shock move to Manchester United

Manchester United have been linked with ‘interest’ in Newcastle United and England winger Anthony Gordon.

The 23-year-old has risen to prominence since his time at Everton but he didn’t leave the Toffees for one of the biggest clubs in the world. That is why I believe Gordon aspires to greater things than Newcastle. Who would blame him?

Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023. Last season, which marked his first full campaign at St James’ Park, he scored 10 goals and created 12 in all competitions. You can back him to record the same tally, move to a new club this summer or win the Ballon d’Or with the top online sports betting sites.

Recent reports claim Newcastle are ready to offer their winger a ‘lucrative new contract’ in an attempt to keep clubs like United and Liverpool at bay. It comes after months of speculation over Gordon’s future amid claims Newcastle were open to selling some of their star players to keep in line with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

The June 30 PSR deadline for Premier League clubs has since passed but that has not stopped Gordon from being linked with moves to United and Liverpool.

The Magpies are clearly worried about potentially losing one of their star players to one of the bigger English clubs. They have also witnessed a period of significant change over the last few weeks, with directors Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi leaving amid the appointment of Paul Mitchell as the club’s new sporting director.

If United were to show genuine interest in Gordon, I reckon the winger would jump at the opportunity.

Howe confident Gordon will stay

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is confident Gordon will stay at the club despite being linked with a move away from St. James’ Park.

It’s worth noting that Howe doesn’t know how long he will be at Newcastle for after being listed as one of the FA’s leading candidates to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager.

Howe has told reporters that Gordon is happy at Newcastle, saying: “We’ve had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative,” he said.

“He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle and I want to make that clear to all our supporters.

“Anthony needs a bit of a break but by the time he comes back, he’ll be ready to go. He’s such an important player for us. We didn’t want to lose anybody. Why would we want to lose our best players?

“We fought really hard to make the right decisions but in those last few weeks it was very, very difficult [selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.”
