Fabrizio Romano provides update on Manchester United pursuit to sign Matthijs de Ligt

Manchester United have already made two signings this summer and the club is expected to make more before the deadline.

Joshua Zirkzee was the first player to arrive following a transfer from Bologna. He was later joined by 18-year-old defender Leny Yoro from Lille.

United are understood to be targeting more signings with targets such as Bayern Munich’s Matthijs de Ligt and Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte still being pursued.

The Reds are also trying to prioritise the sale of players who are deemed surplus to requirements.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims United are facing problems in their attempts to sign De Ligt. While speaking to his YouTube audience, Romano explained United are not willing to match Bayern’s asking price for the Dutch defender.

Romano said: “Man United have an agreement with Matthijs de Ligt, but outgoings are crucial, and at the moment, Man United will never agree to pay 50 million euros in one solution or with no add-ons.

“Man United always wanted to include add-ons as part of the negotiation with Bayern, and this is why the situation remains open. Man United are not paying €50m guaranteed so have to change the structure of the deal. Meanwhile, Matthijs de Ligt is waiting.”

Personal terms are not thought to be an issue with De Ligt keen on a move to United.

Having worked under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, De Ligt will already be aware of the manager’s expectations and demands. It’s a positive sign that he wants to reunite with his former boss at Old Trafford.

Signing De Ligt would completely transform United’s defensive department and it would give us depth going into the 2024/25 season.

Bayern may need to lower their demands or De Ligt risks missing out on a move to United.

  1. Whilst reports are that United want to purchase de Ligt, they would be better spending on Goncalo Inacio from Sporting. He would not have the injury issues that de Ligt, and is also a left footer so more adept at covering for Martinez when he is injured. Inacio is also available for less than de Ligt
