Euro club ‘now asking for’ £17.7m more to sanction player’s exit after learning of United’s interest

Despite a report from Italy on Monday claiming Youssouf Fofana was ‘virtually’ an AC Milan player, Monaco have seemingly paused transfer proceedings to weigh up their options.

La Gazzetta dello Sport release an update last night which detailed just how advanced the French international’s move to Milan was; he is already in the city attending a friend’s wedding while Gerry Cardinale, the club’s owner, flew in unannounced to meet directors and attend a brand event.

After learning of interest from both Manchester United and Atletico Madrid, the Rossoneri stepped up their efforts to seal Fofana’s signature before others had the chance. He had reportedly agreed a four-year deal with the San Siro, with the board expecting him to officially put pen to paper in the next ‘48-72 hours’ – the report was released at 11pm on July 22.

Monaco increase Fofana price tag after United establish interest

Yet, Monaco have evidently had somewhat of a change of heart. While they were initially prepared to accept Milan’s upfront fee of €14 million (£11.7m), they are ‘now asking for’ an increased price of €35m (£29.4m) after being made aware that both United and Madrid are now keen admirers of the midfielder – as per Gianluca Di Marzio.

Fofana, 25, is out of contract with the Ligue 1 outfit in 2025. Fabrizio Romano declared earlier in the window that he would ‘100 per cent’ be leaving Monaco this summer, though it now remains to be seen where he’ll end up.
