English player was unable to seal long-awaited move to United after failing two medicals, he’s now playing in League One

One goalkeeper was unable to complete his dream move to Manchester United due to failing two separate medicals six months apart.

Indeed, the Red Devils had scouted shot-stopper Toby Savin for a number of years before they finally accelerated their efforts to acquire his signature in January 2024.

At the time, Savin was playing for League Two outfit Accrington Stanley but had been targeted by United as a third-choice goalkeeping option behind Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

The 23-year-old was understandably keen to make the switch to the top flight, even if it meant adjusting to a significantly lesser role on the sidelines at Old Trafford. Yet, when he failed his mid-season medical, the deal collapsed entirely, according to the Daily Mail.

Another gutting blow for Stavin

Following his contract expiry with Stanley this summer, Stavin hoped to finally get his United transfer over the line at the second time of trying – but proceeded to fail another medical only this month.

Stavin had suffered a lengthy injury setback in September, which led to him missing six months of action, so you can only assume that the layoff played a part in his tests not meeting the standards required.

He has since signed for Shrewsbury Town as a free agent.
