‘Personally…’: Euro giants’ president hints he’d rather sell United target than his senior counterpart

Bayern Munich’s honorary president, Uli Hoeness, has admitted there’s a chance Matthijs de Ligt could leave the club this summer amid strong interest from Manchester United.

Following the Netherlands’ semi-final exit from Euro 2024 on July 10, fans expected that United would accelerate their efforts to sign the centre-half, having engaged in negotiations with his representatives throughout the tournament.

He was, of course, unable to directly discuss the intricate terms of any prospective deal while he was away on international duty, although reports did suggest that personal terms had been agreed between both parties.

Yet, the Red Devils then turned their attention to young prospect Leny Yoro. They decided to try and hijack Real Madrid’s move for the teenager by testing Lille’s resolve with a £52 million bid, which was quickly accepted.

Madrid was thought to be Yoro’s priority destination amidst growing interest across Europe, but the Spanish giants were reluctant to meet Lille’s demands due to the player having only one year remaining on his deal.

After the Frenchman decided he was ready to accept a move to Old Trafford, the club flew him out for his medical and had him put pen to paper as swiftly as possible. He featured in yesterday’s pre-season win over Rangers, partnering veteran Jonny Evans in the backline.

Alas, United’s links with De Ligt have since gone quiet. They have not ruled out another centre-back addition, presumably due to the lack of depth Erik ten Hag now faces following Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala’s departures.

Bayern chief outlines stance on potential De Ligt sale

It seems as though Bayern will give the green light to De Ligt’s sale should a suitable offer arrive, too – that’s if Hoeness’ comments are anything to go by.

He has seemingly hinted that if a defender leaves, he’d rather it be the Dutchman over his senior counterpart Dayot Upamecano.

“It’s possible that a defender will leave,” Hoeness conceded, per Maximilian Koch. “De Ligt is Dutch, the coach at Manchester United is Dutch…

“I would have no problem if he stays. Personally, I would not sell Upamecano.”
