Manchester United vs Rangers preview: Potential return for Scotland midfielder after Euro 2024

Manchester United head to Scotland later this week for their second pre-season friendly match of the summer.

Rangers await in Edinburgh as we get to take on the Gers in their home country, at the Edinburgh stadium following last year’s 1-0 win over Lyon.

Erik ten Hag will demand a better performance from his youthful squad than they mustered in Monday’s 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg. Only five senior players featured but Scott McTominay will link up with the squad for pre-season training on Wednesday. The Scotland international, who was competing at Euro 2024 this summer, could be in contention to feature against Rangers.

Match details

  • Manchester United vs Rangers kicks off at 4 pm at Murrayfield in Edinburgh
  • The match will be televised live on MUTV and Rangers TV

McTominay will be the first of our Euro 2024 participants to rejoin the squad after Steve Clark’s men exited the tournament at the group stage, however, Denmark duo Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund will join the squad next week before the squad travels to the US.

United are waiting on several key players to return from European Championship and Copa America commitments, but this is a problem most top clubs will have to deal with this summer. It can’t be used as an excuse for lack of preparation.

It is worth noting that Rangers were also on the receiving end of a defeat in their initial pre-season friendly, losing 2-1 to Ajax last weekend. They finished runners-up to rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership last term, with the Celts winning the league by eight points. They reached the last 16 of the Europa League before suffering elimination at the hands of Benfica.

Rangers have two former Reds in their ranks, including Jack Butland and Tom Lawrence.

United will fly out to America to face Arsenal after taking on Rangers.
