Rio Ferdinand names three players who can help England to European glory

England have an embarrassment of riches at Euro 2024. That has not stopped them from producing a goalless draw against Slovenia as Gareth Southgate continues to mishandle the squad’s talent.

Rio Ferdinand believes that a few changes to the England team could see the team drastically improve. The former Manchester United and England defender has called on three young players to start their upcoming games.

England fans want change because their performances have been flat. There can be no excuses after securing a place in the easier side of the draw by topping Group C.

Southgate brought three players on from the bench last night who Ferdinand thinks should be starters for England at Euro 2024. Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon may be the future but let’s not pretend Southgate has better options.

Ferdinand took to X after the match, writing: “If Kobbie/Palmer + Gordon start our next games… We will go on & win this tournament. Trust the fearless youngsters Gareth.”

United midfielder Mainoo was introduced at half-time and was an instant upgrade on Conor Gallagher. Gary Neville and Roy Keane argued that he should be starting for England in their post-match coverage.

Palmer and Gordon came on late, but they still showed signs of willingness to get at the opposition. They also deserve a chance from the start.

Only time will tell if Southgate is going to persist with Alexander-Arnold or Gallagher in midfield…
