It is also important to take note of Fernandes turning 30 in September. From a selfish point of view, the Portugal international could be thinking if he’ll ever win any major trophies at United.
The FA Cup triumph put a magical end to a difficult 2023/24 season, but top players like Fernandes want to look back on more than that when they eventually hang up their boots. I’m talking about Premier League titles and European Cups.
Recent reports suggest Fernandes’ agent has held talks with several top clubs as he prepares to make a decision on his future at United.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano took to social media with claims that Fernandes’ agent, Miguel Pinho, has recently held discussions with several elite sides across Europe.
Fernandes wishes to stay at United but no decision has been made yet.

Without wanting to sound like a smart arse, I can’t help but point out how Pinho represents many footballers who will be linked with moves in the upcoming transfer window. Take Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio as an example. The Portuguese centre-back was linked with a move to United in the past, though it looks like Liverpool have intensified their interest in recent months.
United need to sell players before they can spend money on targets of their own. That has sparked speculation about Fernandes’ future at Old Trafford as he approaches the final two years of his deal.
However, United could trigger a clause to extend Fernandes’ contract by a further 12 months to protect his market value.
Fernandes expressed his desire to play for United in a column published last week via The Players’ Tribune.
I, for one, would be gutted to see Fernandes leave because of his importance to the team as captain. It was a poor season for the Reds but he was still our most influential player by some distance.
