Manchester United coach opens the door to Kaizer Chiefs

Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has opened the door to becoming Kaizer Chiefs manager.

McCarthy’s contract is set to expire at the end of June and nobody knows for certain what the future holds for Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff.

With United yet to decide on the manager, McCarthy has revealed that he would be open to making the switch or at least giving it some thought as he sees Kaizer Chiefs being an ‘institution’ of the game.

“Not many coaches in the world say no to institutions. Manchester United is an institution. Real Madrid is an institution. Bayern Munich is an institution,” McCarthy told Robert Marawa on 94.7FM, as cited by SNL24.com.

“Look, Vincent Kompany is gone to Bayern Munich, he is gone to join an institution. And I think Kaizer Chiefs you can safely say that Kaizer Chiefs is also an institution. It’s a great club, my team in South Africa that I supported as a kid. Loved the Black and Gold, everything Kaizer Chiefs.

“Unfortunately, I’ve never had the pleasure to play for them, or to coach them. I can’t really speak on others but if the opportunity comes, if the opportunity arises of anything, of course you would have to sit down and think about it because like I said, you don’t say ‘no’ to institutions.”

McCarthy was credited with having the likes of Marcus Rashford firing in front of goal during the 2022/23 campaign, as Ten Hag’s coach designated to working with forward players.

It remains to be seen if McCarthy will be at Old Trafford next season, but I am sure he will want to take on a manager’s role of his own in the future.

Kaizer Chiefs search for new manager

In October 2023, Cavin Johnson was appointed interim coach of Kaizer Chiefs and they have not been able to find a man for the full-time role since then.

Maybe that is why McCarthy is suddenly throwing his hat into the ring.
