What does the future hold for these players with their contracts expiring in 2025?

It’s been a season with plenty of highs and lows for Manchester United, in what has been a turbulent season for Erik ten Hag to say the least. His side are sixth in the table heading into the final month of the 2023/24 Premier League season, and they’ll be looking to finish strongly, as they look to keep their chances of finishing fifth alive.

We’ve seen glimpses of Manchester United’s exciting quality, which was evident with some of the quality of the goals they scored in the dramatic 4-3 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last time out. There aren’t too many players leaving the club when their contracts expire in the summer of 2024, but there are some notable names that are out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 season, and it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for them.

We’ll take you through the players that are out of contract in the summer of 2025, and whether they have much of a future with Manchester United.

Scott McTominay

McTominay’s work in this Manchester United team often goes unnoticed, but he’s popped up in some important moments throughout his time with the club. The Scottish international has made 245 appearances in total for Manchester United, and his versatility is one of his biggest strengths.

We’ve seen the 27-year-old operate in the heart of defence, centre of midfield, or playing behind the centre forward at times during his time at Old Trafford. McTominay is a player that understands what it means to play for a club the size of Manchester United, and it’s hugely important to keep players like that in and around the senior squad. At 27, he’s still got plenty of years ahead of him to play in this team, and the club should look at extending his contract when they feel suitable. Manchester United also hold the option of extending McTominay’s contract by a further year if they wish to do so.

Harry Maguire

Maguire has been an excellent servant to the club, and has made 201 appearances for Manchester United since signing back in 2019 from Leicester City. The defender has been a regular in the England setup under Gareth Southgate as well, and will be hoping that he can be included in the squad for the upcoming European Championships. It’s been revealed to us that Maguire is priced at ⅛ to be included in the England squad this summer, which means he’s one of the favourites to be on the plane. Alternatively, you can use this useful odds converter to convert those odds into decimals.

The club have the option of extending his contract by a year, but it remains to be seen as to whether they’ll do so, as Maguire hasn’t been at his best for Erik ten Hag’s side, although it’s difficult to pass too much judgement on his performances when the rest of his Manchester United team-mates haven’t been much good themselves. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see him depart at the end of the 2024/25 season, but his future could depend on whether Raphael Varane or Victor Lindelof depart in that same year or not.

Raphael Varane

There was a considerable amount of hype when Varane signed for the club from Spanish giants Real Madrid, but it’s safe to say that he’s not quite lived up to that hype when he arrived. The experienced Frenchman has made 30 appearances in total for the club this season, and has consistently featured in the starting XI since the turn of the New Year.

Varane is a player that has played his football at a high level, and his experience could prove useful when it comes to developing younger players such as Willy Kambwala. It should be a no-brainer to extend his contract beyond the summer of 2025.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Wan Bissaka has had his fair share of injury problems over the years, but has been one of the few players to come away with a fair amount of credit to their name. The full-back is still only 26, and still has plenty of years in the Premier League ahead of him, and Manchester United should certainly look at addressing his long-term future at the earliest of opportunities if they’re keen to keep hold of him at Old Trafford.

Amad Diallo

This is a player that will divide opinion on whether the club should offer him a new contract, and the divide in opinion is understandable. Diallo has been limited to just four first-team appearances for Manchester United this term, and with the likes of Antony, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho all ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s a tough ask to see Diallo break into the starting XI on a regular basis anytime soon.

However, we have seen glimpses of his potential, as he stepped off the substitutes bench to score a dramatic late winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup, which sparked jubilant scenes at Old Trafford. Manchester United have an option to extend his contract by an additional year, but it remains to be seen as to whether Diallo will want to stick around if he continues to struggle for minutes.

He was brilliant in a loan spell with Sunderland not so long ago, and you’d imagine he’ll have plenty of offers from elsewhere heading into the final year of his contract with the club.

Christian Eriksen

The Danish international has been restricted to just 21 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United this season, and so you’d imagine that his days with the club are numbered, especially with the emergence of the ever-impressive Kobbie Mainoo, who has made a strong start to his senior career with the club.

Eriksen could prove a useful addition to a number of Premier League teams, and he’ll be keen to find somewhere that can offer him regular game time. It would be of slight surprise to see him reach the end of his contract with Manchester United, as you’d imagine that some clubs will already be keen on landing his signature whilst he’s struggling for game time with Erik ten Hag’s side.

Victor Lindelof

Lindelof has been with the club since 2017, and has gone on to make 258 appearances in total, although his game time has been hit or miss in recent years due to injury problems. It remains to be seen as to whether his long-term future remains with Manchester United, but given that he’s younger than Harry Maguire, he could be a better option for the club moving forwards.

If he can stay fit for the majority of the 2024/25 season, then we expect him to stick around at Old Trafford.

Willy Kambwala

The youngster has made seven first-team appearances for Manchester United in his breakthrough league campaign with the Red Devils. He’s 19, and certainly hasn’t looked out of place in the heart of the Manchester United defence. If one of Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, or Victor Lindelof are to depart in 2025, then that could present Kambwala with the ideal opportunity to cement his place in Erik ten Hag’s plans.

However, it wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to see the club extend his contract and then send the defender out on loan in search of regular game time in senior football, as he’s a player that could benefit from consistent minutes.
