Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville both went through a whirlwind of emotions during Manchester United’s clash with Liverpool yesterday.
The two former players joined Peter Drury on Sky Sports’ commentary for the fixture, which saw the Red Devils endure another chaos-filled match that ultimately culminated in them taking a point.
Liverpool scored the first and final goals of the game, but it was two moments of magic from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo in between that led to the away side stumbling in the title race and consequently dropping from first to second place.
In fact, a large majority of the United faithful are of the belief that the penalty in the closing stages of the game – converted by Mohamed Salah to make it 2-2 – shouldn’t have actually been awarded, considering Aaron Wan-Bissaka didn’t make contact with Harvey Elliott before the forward went down.
Nevertheless, both rivals will now have to come to peace with the spoils being shared.
Carragher lauds moment of magic from Fernandes
Analysing the evening’s affairs on the Gary Neville Podcast post-match, Carragher couldn’t help but voice praise for Fernandes’ contribution.
The captain was able to capitalise on a horror mistake from Jarrell Quansah, latching onto a loose ball and striking it from around 45 yards out to beat Caoimhin Kelleher and level the scoring.
“Even though he’s made a mistake, it’s a mistake, but I think it’s more about the finish than the mistake,” Carragher began.
“Bruno Fernandes, we speak about him a lot, but that was out of this world, wasn’t it? Absolutely world-class.”
