Scott McTominay’s absence marks a 56th case of injury/illness that’s led to a United player missing a game

Scott McTominay is absent from Manchester United’s matchday squad to face Liverpool this afternoon.

It’s since been confirmed following the line-up announcement that the Scotland international misses out through injury, marking the 56th separate case of injury or illness that’s led to a United player missing at least one match.

Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans were substituted with fitness complaints during the midweek defeat to Chelsea, with the latter entering the fold for just 21 minutes before signalling to the bench that he was unable to continue.

As such, it’s left just Harry Maguire and 19-year-old Willy Kambwala as the only available centre-backs, given that Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are also unavailable for at least a month.

United and Liverpool ready to lock horns

Kick-off is now fast approaching at Old Trafford in the high-stakes clash, and United are on the back of two dismal results – a 1-1 draw away to Brentford and a 4-3 loss at Stamford Bridge. Liverpool currently sit atop the table, having won their past two contests.
