You’d expect that the odds of Erik ten Hag being sacked have been significantly slashed tonight.
In the space of just five days, Manchester United have dropped points despite leading in the 99th minute and 96th minute. The latter of which saw the Reds forced to settle for a 1-1 draw after being thoroughly dominated by Brentford at the Gtech Stadium last Saturday, while tonight’s affairs had Ten Hag’s men concede two stoppage-time goals as they fell to a 4-3 defeat to Chelsea.
Cole Palmer’s deflected strike in the 100th minute marked the latest winning goal on Premier League record. As well as that, it’s also the latest that a team has ever gone on to lose a game despite holding an advantage in the dying embers.
Now winless in two, the Old Trafford faithful have likely come to terms with the fact that a Champions League spot looks unreachable, especially given that United host league leaders Liverpool on Sunday.
Ten Hag has his say
Reacting to the affairs in West London post-match, Ten Hag told TNT Sports: “We started poor, kicking the ball away and defending poorly. But you saw we were dominating the game and it was brilliant how we played – we deserved to win the game. But you cannot give it away like we did, and we have to manage this game better. It is a team performance – you can point to one of the players, but it is about team performance.
“Also, I think lucky at the end with the penalty situation… questionable and very soft, but we have to do better. [The result is] definitely a setback, and now we have to deal with this and get up – we are resilient, and you have seen that today.”
