Manchester United have spent almost the entirety of the 2023/2024 campaign thus far playing catch-up.
Now, with nine Premier League matches remaining for the Red Devils, they’re counting on their top-four competitors stumbling in the race for the Champions League places.
United are currently sixth-placed in the table, eight points behind Tottenham Hotspur and 11 points away from fourth-placed Aston Villa.
None of the sides will face each other again before the end of the season, so Erik ten Hag’s men can only win their games and hope other clubs can do them favours elsewhere.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was pressed on the prospect of United closing the gap between them recently, with one reporter asking: “Can you still see them challenging you? It’s a big gap and also they’ve been so inconsistent as well.”
The Australian responded: “Do you see us challenging Manchester City? No? Well, they’re only eight points ahead of us.”
Reporter: Man United are eight points behind you, can they challenge for a Champions League spot? 🧐
