Pundit says in-form United star was dealt ‘a slap in the face’ from manager with recent starting 11 omission

Chris Sutton believes Marcus Rashford should feel slightly hard done by after being benched by Gareth Southgate for Anthony Gordon last Saturday.

The Manchester United star was omitted from the starting 11 in place of Gordon, who made his first-ever senior appearance for England when they took on Brazil at Wembley.

Rashford, 26, has been in perhaps his most prolific run of form heading into the current international break, having notched three goals in his past three outings. One was a scintillating outside-the-box strike against Manchester City, while his latest was a pivotal equaliser in extra-time of United’s FA Cup triumph over Liverpool.

Alas, he made an off-the-bench cameo in the second-half of the Three Lions’ clash, entering the fold in the 75th minute alongside fellow Red – and England debutant – Kobbie Mainoo. The latter is expected to make his first-ever start for the national team when they take on Belgium this evening, and you’d maybe expect Rashford to be granted more than 15 minutes in the tank this time out.

Sutton on Rashford omission

Reacting to the 1-0 defeat at the hands of the five-time world champions, Sutton told 5 Live Sport yesterday:  “I thought Gordon had a decent game and I just wonder if Gareth would possibly stick with him.

“There’s a bit of a slap in the face for Marcus Rashford, I think, that Anthony Gordon started in front of him, but he didn’t do himself any harm.”
