Swedish defender Henrik Castegren is not a player that has come under our radar previously, but that won’t stop journalists from asking any footballer they meet questions about Manchester United.
Of course, every footballer dreams of playing for a club like United but it’s an honour that should be kept for the best and most committed players. The problem is there aren’t many clubs of that stature, with La Liga giants Real Madrid being an exception.
Castegren has been interviewed by Allsvenskan and the responsible reporter was keen to ask about his future, with a question referencing Premier League rivals United and Liverpool.
So, why was Categren – of all players — asked a question about United?
Well, editors are looking for clicks and there is never a shortage of interest when it comes to Manchester United news.
The main reason, however, is that Castegren is a Liverpool fan and is married to a social media influencer who recently made a joke with him by showing their son wearing a United shirt.
This led to a tongue-in-cheek question during the interview about whether United would be the Sweden international’s ‘dream club’ for him in his bid to reach the very top as a footballer.
Castegren laughed and said (H/t Sport Witness): “To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have turned down United but it was a bit of a shock to see Frans in a United shirt. It took a maximum of 20 minutes, then the shirt was folded in a package at a post office, ready to be sent back. Then we went to the nearest sports shop and bought a Liverpool shirt. Now he is completely in love with Sirius, Liverpool and Sweden.”
At the age of 28, it sounds like Castegren has missed the boat to play for one of Europe’s top clubs but we should never say never.
