Photo: A welcome sight for United fans as Lisandro Martinez finally returns to training

Lisandro Martinez is closing in on his long-awaited return to action after a third injury setback in the past 12 months.

The Manchester United stalwart saw his maiden Old Trafford campaign end prematurely after he sustained a metatarsal fracture last April, before suffering a re-aggravation of the same issue just one month into 2023/2024.

He returned temporarily following a three-month spell on the sidelines, playing just three Premier League matches until a collision with Vladimir Coufal resulted in Martinez injuring his knee.

Fans were surprised to see the 26-year-old included in Argentina’s squad for their forthcoming double-header of fixtures given that he hasn’t featured on the pitch since February, however, it was later confirmed that he would be undergoing the final stage of his rehabilitation with his national team.

Martinez is expected to be named in United’s squad when club action resumes on March 30.
