Gareth Southgate addresses Mason Greenwood situation ahead of Euro 2024

Mason Greenwood’s international future with England remains unclear.

The Manchester United forward, currently on loan at Getafe, has not been part of the England senior setup since September 2020 when he made his Three Lions debut before being sent home by Gareth Southgate for breaching COVID-19 regulations.

Southgate has now ruled out Greenwood returning in time for Euro 2024 – despite stating a return could be on the cards after the summer tournament.

Greenwood is expected to leave United on a permanent transfer this summer, and Southgate is not interested in extra drama before Euro 2024.

Southgate said (via The Mirror): “Well for me I don’t think it’s something for pre-Euros. I think allowing him to get his career going again abroad appears to have been a good move but I have to say I have not tracked it closely. I think at this moment it would be a big distraction for the team and let’s see where that leads next season.”

The England manager went on to add that he will need to carry out his investigation into the matter before deciding if Greenwood deserves another chance on the international stage.

“I would need to know more details about the whole thing before it was an option.”

There has been suggestions in the past that Jamaica will offer Greenwood a switch, but he may as well bide his time in Spain and keep doing whatever he’s doing.

The 22-year-old faces more uncertainty at club level after Sir Jim Ratcliffe revealed a fresh decision would be made on his future.

  1. Greenwood should be given another chance. His qualities are there for the world to see. Man utd should swallow their pride, stop playing holier than thou and reintegrate the young man into the team, after all, the girl in the midst of this crisis is living with him and they both have a child.

    1. Spot on my friend! The hypocrisy being played around this poor fellow is getting to very ridiculous. Tell me who is without a fault. Why are Mason’s career is being poorly handled by certain interest group within and outside Manchester United space leaves a lot of questions unanswered! Maybe theres are a lot of things they are not telling us. Otherwise, all concerned should converge, align and rebuild the career of this gem! Yes, Mason Greenwood is a rare talent waiting to be unleashed and relaunched into world professional football. Manchester United should be decisive in their plan to re-integrate him into their fold. I will never forgive them if another club grabs him.

  2. Let the ‘saint’ who has not sinned in anywhere throws the 1st stone. Don’t try to play God, my friends…..

  3. It’s time certain people and group should stop toying with this guy’s career. Enough of the nonsense and hypocrisy. He has moved on with his life. He has made up with her girlfriend, had a child together and both are happy! Why are people still harassing the poor bloke? Mason is diamond; it will be a very poor management decision to lose to anothe club.
