Manchester United have received a huge boost in their bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League after Tottenham Hotspur were defeated by Fulham on Saturday.
Ange Postecoglou’s men had a game in hand going into this weekend, with the London club having the opportunity to go nine points clear of the Reds.
Instead, they ended up spurning their chance to leapfrog Aston Villa in fourth place and inviting United back into the conversation. United now sit just six points behind Spurs with ten games remaining.
The Champions League has been revamped for next season and depending on how other European leagues do compared to English clubs in European competitions this season, a fifth-place finish could very well be enough to reserve a seat at Europe’s fine dining table in the 2024/25 season.
It must, however, be said that Tottenham remain clear favourites to finish fourth or fifth, with United still having a long way to go before that six-point gap is plugged.
Additionally, United have tough fixtures coming up and will continue to rely on the two teams above them slipping up and doing them a favour.
Fulham’s unlikely 3-0 win over Spurs was, however, welcomed news for Ten Hag as he prepares his side for a mouthwatering FA Cup quarter-final clash against Liverpool on Sunday.
