Manchester United have reportedly identified Dougie Freedman as the top target for head of recruitment.
According to The Independent, Crystal Palace are braced for an official approach this week.
The former striker is well respected within football circles after building his reputation as a shrewd sporting director at Selhurst Park. Freedman has been responsible for Palace maximising the considerable football catchment area of south London.
United seemingly want Freedman to start in his role as soon as possible because there is a good chance he won’t be placed on gardening leave, which is something we’ve seen happen to prospective technical director Dan Ashworth and chief executive Omar Berrada.
Miguel Delaney explains in his report: “That might be possible with Freedman as Palace’s stance has generally been they don’t stand in people’s way if they want to further their career but they will offer a new deal and allow the individual to make up their own mind.”
The respected journalist adds that United have alternative options for the position, but Freedman stood out as he meets a number of specific requirements listed by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Sports group.
This is another potentially appointment that would excite me.
