Luke Shaw’s season could be over with a muscle injury, leaving Manchester United without a specialist left-back and meaning he could miss Euro 2024.

The left-back has had horrible luck with injuries this season and his latest setback comes as a major blow for United.

Shaw sustained a knock in United’s 2-1 win over Aston Villa two weeks ago, but Erik ten Hag said he made a precautionary substitution at the time. A week later he pulled up against Luton Town and now faces another few months on the sidelines.

In a statement, Manchester United said: “Further assessment is still needed to determined the severity but we expect him to be absent for a few months.”

When Shaw picked up an injury at the beginning of the season, Ten Hag quickly opted to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham. The club terminated the Spaniard’s deal when it looked like the English full-back was on the right path in recovery.

The former Southampton player has also been Gareth Southgate’s first choice left-back for England. With 31 caps to his name, Shaw is now set to miss the March friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, and there will be doubts over whether he’ll miss out on a place in the squad for this summer’s tournament unless he recovers in time.

Meanwhile, Shaw’s deputy Tyrell Malacia is yet to play this season due to a knee injury. That has not helped with United’s left-back injury crisis and we’ve already seen Victor Lindelof shoehorned into the role.
