Harry Maguire’s retrial for assault and bribery has been shelved for more than a year. There’s also a possibility it will never go ahead.

The Manchester United centre-back was due to plead his innocence this week at a long-awaited hearing on the Greek island of Mykonos.

But now the wait is set to continue with a legal strike in place meaning it has been postponed and lawyers say it will now not take place until March next year at the earliest.

It is claimed that officials are reluctant to pursue the case amid fears it has damaged the island’s reputation and harmed tourism, while the United and England defender probably just wants to move on from the incident itself.

A source has told The Sun: “Harry has – and always will – contest the charges.

“He was on holiday with friends and family and was understandably distraught. He doesn’t want this hanging over him another day but respects the Greek legal system.”

I hope he accepts it enough to stay away from there in future because it always sounded like a peculiar case. The 30-year-old was held by police and spent two nights in a cell after an altercation on a night out.

A fight broke out after Maguire’s sister Diasy was injected with a ‘rape drug’ in a nightclub.

Two days later he was hauled into court alongside lawyers with just two days to prepare.

Crucial evidence was withheld from the trial and Maguire was found guilty of bodily harm, attempted bribery and violence. It was very clear from that point that they were trying to do him.

This was when Maguire was handed a suspended jail term of 21 months, which was followed up by an appeal by the player’s lawyers. They wanted to push for a return to court so their client could clear his name.

The next date to put into your calendar is March 12 2025.
