Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested that the club ‘might have to’ build a new stadium to move with the times.
It wasn’t that long ago that Old Trafford was an example for other stadiums across Europe and the English top division. That has changed because the Glazer never maintained it. Now, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has a bigger job on his hands to improve the infrastructure at the club.
Ratcliffe will also be planning to invest on the pitch too, but the longer they leave Old Trafford the worse it will get.
According to The Telegraph, Ratcliffe wants to create a ‘Wembley of the North’ but there is uncertainty over whether he wants to use the existing stadium or build on the same site from scratch.
One of the issues fans have faced at Old Trafford is a leaky roof. Not very pleasant when it’s pouring down and you are trying to stay dry during a match.
Solskjaer, who played 366 times for United and managed the club between December 2018 and 2021, believes it may be time to move on from Old Trafford like we did from The Cliff training ground.
The Norwegian says the current state of the stadium means the club is falling behind its competitors off the pitch as well as on it.
“We have to move with the times and at the moment something has to happen,” he said, via Reuters.
“It’s either renovation or a new stadium because we’re falling behind if we’re staying in the same place we have.
“It’s going to divide fans for sure, because history is important. But we traded The Cliff (training ground), which was iconic for United and the Busby Babes, with Carrington.
“It looks like we might have to build a new stadium.”
