Marcus Rashford’s latest actions, according to former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, demonstrate that the Man United sensation was “never the saint he was made out to be.”
The Man United forward, who reportedly called in ill to training after going out on the town in Belfast, is facing an unclear future at Old Trafford.
The 26-year-old had his career best season last year, but he hasn’t exactly dazzled everyone this year. He just ended an eight-month goalless streak at Old Trafford recently.
Carragher said Rashford is gradually revealing more of his own personality. Speaking on Stick to Football podcast, via Sky Bet, he said:
“I wouldn’t get too carried away [with Rashford’s behaviour].
“We all tell stories about what we got up to when we were players. I certainly had a few escapades off the pitch with drink and you get in a bit of trouble, and that’s what’s happened.
“I don’t ever believe he was this saint that he was made out to be, and this inner circle, I think they have done a great job with Marcus – there was a lot of PR around him. It put him as if he was this guy that was almost going to save the world, when he’s just a young lad from Manchester, with a few quid and is a brilliant footballer.”
It seems excessive for Carragher to exploit Rashford’s recent shenanigans as a justification to undermine years of good actions in the past, even though it would be incorrect to argue that Rashford isn’t to fault for his recent lack of discipline in Northern Ireland.
