Erik ten Hag has a plan to beat Arsenal and Tottenham to the signing of €40m striker

With Erik ten Hag and company already contacting Joshua Zirkzee’s representatives in an attempt to beat off Arsenal and Tottenham to a move, Manchester United have made significant progress in signing the Bologna striker.

The Red Devils have struggled for goals this season. Even Luton Town have scored more goals than United this season, that is how bad the situation is.

Rasmus Hojlund, the summer signing, has shown glimpses of his potential, but Ten Hag has had to carefully control his workload. Meanwhile, United have scored just 24 goals in 21 games this season, which is the fewest goals scored by any team in the top half of the table.

Ten Hag has been frantically trying to bolster his team throughout the January transfer window because of the above mentioned goal scoring issues.

The name of Bologna attacker Zirkzee is one that seems to be attracting more attention before the summer transfer market opens.

After leaving Bayern Munich for Italy, the Netherlands U21 striker has established a strong reputation for himself. In 23 games this season, he has scored 10 goals and provided two assists.

Due to his success, more Premier League teams are beginning to pay attention to his performances; Arsenal and Tottenham are two of the teams who have been linked with a January approach.

Ben Jacobs, a reporter for CBS, has now revealed what he knows about United’s interest in the striker.

In an interview with Givemesport, he disclosed that Red Devils representatives have already reached him regarding a summer transfer.

“Zirkzee is a really interesting one for the summer,” Jacobs stated.

“Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are three to watch from the Premier League.

“Manchester United are the ones that have had some kind of formative approach, certainly on the player side. Arsenal and Spurs haven’t moved yet, but that may change in the summer.

“There is a release clause, and if Bologna are to be believed, it only applies to Bayern and is €40m [£34m].

“Bayern sources term a move to re-sign him as ‘unlikely but not impossible’. So they can’t yet be 100% discounted. And as I say, Bologna have said on record that the release clause only applies to Bayern.”
