Ally McCoist backs Manchester United approach to January transfer window

Ally McCoist has backed Manchester United’s approach to the January transfer window.

The former Scotland international also cast his opinion on Raphael Varane’s future, amid doubts over whether he will be offered a new contract at the club.

Speaking to talkSPORT BET, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News, McCoist said: “United need a massive transformation in their squad. This January might be a window in which they get rid of more players than they bring in and I think that will suit them in the long-term. One of the reasons why they haven’t chosen to extend Varane’s contract will be his lack of game time, as well as his fitness levels and wages. One of the main things you want from every signing is for them to be able to turn up week-in, week-out.”

Varane doesn’t warrant a new deal on the same salary and could be on the way out in the summer.

In turn, United are being linked with an array of defenders including Jean-Clair Todibo.

The Reds are not expected to make any permanent signings in January, although we’ve seen a number of players leave on loan.
